HISTORY OF MAIN STREET
Officially Created in 1980 after the success of 3 pilot programs in the
late 1970s as a way to bring back blighted downtowns.
Florida Main Street became a state coordinating program in 1985 with the designation of its first 5 Main Street communities.

Main Street Vero Beach was officially designated in 1998 as a way to help economically revitalize the historic downtown district.
There are many reasons for a community to actively encourage the revitalization of the downtown.
An economically healthy downtown:
-
Builds a positive image for the community
-
Creates job opportunities
-
Saves tax dollars
-
Preserves the community’s historic resources
-
Helps to control sprawl
